Andrew Clapham is a Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. He previously served as the first Director of the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights (2006–2014). His research focuses on international human rights law, laws of war, and public international law, with expertise in Africa and Eastern regions. Clapham holds a PhD from the European University Institute in Florence.
He has held significant roles, including Representative of Amnesty International at the UN in New York, Special Adviser on Corporate Responsibility to UN High Commissioner Mary Robinson, and Adviser on International Humanitarian Law to Sergio Vieira de Mello. He served on the UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan (2017–2023) and is an Honorary Member of the International Commission of Jurists. His work bridges legal theory and practice, addressing contemporary challenges in human rights, conflict law, and multilateral governance.
Key research themes include humanitarian law, international organizations, and the interplay between human rights and armed conflict. His publications span books like *The Oxford Handbook of International Law in Armed Conflict* and articles on conscientious objection, non-state actors, and treaty commentary.
