Vinay K. Pathak, Ph.D., is a Senior Investigator and Head of the Viral Mutation Section in the HIV Dynamics and Replication Program at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He holds a B.A. in Biology from UCLA (1979), an M.S. in Comparative Pathology from UC Davis (1983), and a Ph.D. from UC Davis (1988) where he studied eukaryotic protein synthesis initiation factors. His postdoctoral work under Howard Temin pioneered early insights into retroviral mutation mechanisms.
Research Focus: Dr. Pathak leads four primary projects: (1) HIV-1 replication dynamics via live-cell microscopy, revealing nuclear import and uncoating mechanisms; (2) APOBEC3 protein structure/function and therapeutic strategies for HIV cure; (3) Drug resistance in reverse transcriptase inhibitors; (4) Debunking XMRV as a human pathogen. His interdisciplinary work integrates virology, cell biology, and molecular biochemistry.
Awards & Leadership:

- NIH Group Merit Award (2012)
- NIH Special Act or Service Award (2020)
- Cozzarelli Prize for PNAS publication on HIV-1 uncoating (2020)
Grants & Collaborations: Recipient of six NIH IATAP Research Awards, two NIH Bench-to-Bedside Awards, and multiple innovation grants. Co-organized the NIH/FDA COVID-19 Symposium and serves on the NIH COVID-19 Scientific Interest Group Leadership Committee.
Lab & Teams: Directs a team specializing in HIV-1 dynamics using advanced imaging and molecular techniques, with collaborations spanning Yale University and global institutions.
