Barbara Müller is an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Virology, Heidelberg University, leading the Müller Lab at the Center for Integrative Infectious Disease Research (CIID). Her research focuses on HIV-1 assembly, maturation, and post-entry mechanisms, using advanced imaging techniques such as super-resolution microscopy and fluorescence labeling. She also contributed to pandemic response efforts through SARS-CoV-2 antibody assays and epidemiological studies.
Research interests include retroviral dynamics, viral capsid structure-function relationships, and host-cell interactions during HIV replication. Key projects investigate HIV-1 proteolytic maturation, capsid uncoating, and nuclear import. Her lab pioneered fluorescently labeled HIV derivatives to track viral processes in real-time.
Recent work includes studies on HIV-1 spacer peptide 2 (SP2) in maturation, SARS-CoV-2 transmission in households, and post-acute sequelae of COVID-19. Collaborations with bioinformaticians and clinicians expanded her team’s capabilities in multiplex serology and population-based studies.
Advising includes PhD students and postdocs in virology and immunology. The Müller Lab is part of CIID’s interdisciplinary environment, emphasizing translational research in infectious diseases.
