Victoria Canning is a Professor of Criminology at Lancaster University’s Law School, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS). She leads the Harm, Crime and Criminalisation Research Centre and serves as Associate Director of Border Criminologies at Oxford University. Her roles include Co-Chair of Statewatch, Consultant Editor at Justice, Power and Resistance, and co-editor of the Emerald Activist Criminology series. She co-created the Right to Remain Asylum Navigation Board and consulted on the BAFTA-winning BBC series Exodus: Our Journey to Europe.
Her research focuses on border harms, zemiology, torture, and sexualised violence. She has authored/edited 7 books and supervises PhD students in areas like torture studies and refugee rights. Key awards include the 2018 British Society of Criminology Book Prize.
Her work critiques systemic injustices in immigration detention and advocates abolitionist approaches. She collaborates with academic and activist networks to address social harm and state violence.
