Dr Aila Spathopoulou is a Lecturer in Criminology and Sociology at the University of Stirling’s Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology. She is also an editor at ACME: An International Journal for Critical Geographies.
Her research focuses on:
- Criminalisation of migration and border violence
- Political economies of border control
- Carceral spaces (island detention, ships, seas)
- Border and prison abolition
- Racialised and gendered embodiment of violence
- Autoethnographic and activist methodologies
Key projects include the Leverhulme-funded study Exposing and Combating the Political Economy of Border Violence in the Aegean, involving collaborations with Legal Centre Lesvos, University of Durham, and Feminist Autonomous Centre for Research. Her forthcoming work analyses floating prisons and carceral mobilities in Europe.
Scientific contributions include:
- Bordering and Governmentality around the Greek islands (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023)
- Over 1,000 documented border-related contracts in Greece (2020–2022)
- Coordinated the Feminist No Borders Summer School
- Developing a public database on Greek border-related outsourcing
