Dr Jon Burnett is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology and Graduate Research Director at the School of Criminology, Sociology and Policing, Faculty of Arts, Cultures and Education, University of Hull. His research critically examines carcerality, political economies of work and punishment, state violence, state racism, and immigration control. He has published widely in leading journals such as Race & Class, British Journal of Criminology, State Crime Journal, and Policy & Politics, and has contributed to public discourse through outlets like The Guardian and Open Democracy.

Recent Publications Trends: His recent scholarship, including the 2022 monograph Work and the Carceral State and 2025 chapter on Marxist abolitionism, demonstrates a sustained focus on the intersections of labor, punishment, and racial capitalism. His 2024-2025 works on wage theft and immigration fees highlight the financial and bureaucratic mechanisms of state violence against migrants.

Advising and Grants: Dr Burnett supervises PhD students including Tori German-Gilbert and Alex Dixon. He has secured research funding from the ESRC and was awarded an ISRF fellowship in 2023 for his project on accumulation regimes and the carceral state. He has served as external examiner for PhDs at the University of Leicester, University of Liverpool, and UEL.
Journal Editorial Roles: He was Co-Editor (2019–2024) and remains on the Editorial Collective of Justice, Power and Resistance. He is currently Guest Editor for a special issue on 'The Violence of Law' (2023–2025).
Professional Engagement: He has held roles at the Institute of Race Relations, Medical Justice, and Migrant Action, and contributed to public inquiries such as the Permanent Peoples' Tribunal on Migrant and Refugee Rights.
