Veronika Huta is a Professor in the School of Psychology at the University of Ottawa, where she teaches graduate courses in statistics and positive psychology. Her research centers on the psychological and philosophical dimensions of well-being, particularly the distinctions and interactions between hedonic (pleasure-based), eudaimonic (growth and meaning-based), and extrinsic (status and image-based) pursuits of a good life.
- Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, McGill University (2005)
- B.Sc., Specialist in Psychology, Major in Biology and Physics, University of Toronto (1994)
Her research explores how different orientations toward the good life affect personal well-being (e.g., meaning, self-connection, elevation), prosocial and pro-environmental behaviors, and cognitive and physiological responses. She investigates elevating experiences such as awe, moral elevation, and transcendence, and their role in broadening psychological resources. She also studies predictors like parenting styles and worldviews.
Her recent publications reveal a consistent focus on validating motivational scales (e.g., HEEMA), examining cross-cultural and developmental differences in motivation, and understanding the cognitive and emotional mechanisms underlying helping behavior and self-transcendence. Her work bridges philosophy, psychology, and measurement, emphasizing both quantitative rigor and theoretical depth.
- Founder, Canadian Positive Psychology Association
- Co-organizer, First Cross-Disciplinary Conference on Eudaimonia
- Editorial Board Member, Journal of Happiness Studies
She supervises graduate students and encourages research on novel, existential, and theory-driven topics in well-being. Her lab uses both quantitative and qualitative (mixed methods) approaches. She has developed several psychological instruments, including the HEEMA scale and measures of meaning, elevation, self-connectedness, and carefreeness.
