Katie Gunnell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Carleton University, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia and leads the BEA-WELL Lab. Her research focuses on psychological health mechanisms across populations including youth, adults, and individuals with osteoporosis, examining ill-being, hedonic and eudaimonic well-being, physical activity, and recreational screen time. She investigates psychological needs (competence, autonomy, relatedness) as motivational drivers for behavior change, alongside psychometric and quantitative statistical methodologies.
Her work emphasizes understanding bidirectional relationships between physical activity/screen time and mental health, with a focus on longitudinal analyses. Key contributions include validation research methodologies in sport psychology and factor analysis techniques. Gunnell’s research bridges psychological theory with practical applications in health promotion and behavioral intervention design.
Notable collaborations include studies on self-compassion trajectories in university students and 3-year longitudinal analyses of psychological needs and exercise adherence. Her lab’s interdisciplinary approach integrates clinical, developmental, and quantitative research paradigms.
