Dr Veronica Varela-Mato is a Senior Research Associate in Health and Wellbeing at Loughborough University's School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences. Her work focuses on public health interventions targeting transport workers and workplace health promotion. She leads the NIHR-funded Structured Health Intervention for Truckers (SHIFT) study, investigating health behaviors among long-distance HGV drivers. Her research integrates occupational health, cardiovascular health, and behavioral interventions.
Education: PhD in cardiovascular health and sedentary behaviors (Loughborough University, 2016); postdoctoral work in Exercise Metabolism with Prof. David Stensel. Current collaborations include Prof. Lauren Sherar and the Lifestyle for Health and Wellbeing research group.
Research Focus: Sedentary behavior in transport workers, workplace wellness programs, cardiovascular risk mitigation, and mental health in occupational settings. Recent studies address fatigue management, obesity-related health disparities, and policy-driven interventions like School Streets initiatives.
