Matthew Roberts is a Research Fellow at Loughborough University, affiliated with the Leicester Biomedical Research Centre and the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine. His work focuses on exercise interventions for chronic inflammatory conditions and post-COVID rehabilitation. He completed his PhD in 2020 examining exercise's effects on cardiovascular disease markers in South Asians under Professors David Stensel and David Webb.
Research interests include exercise-immunity interactions, inflammation in long-term conditions like axial spondyloarthritis, and post-hospitalization recovery. Key studies include the PHOSP-R trial (exercise-based post-COVID rehab) and the EXTASI trial (exercise therapy for inflammatory arthritis). His work integrates clinical trials with mechanistic insights into inflammation and cardiometabolic health.
Notable collaborations involve the NIHR-funded Leicester Biomedical Research Centre and UK Biobank for large-scale epidemiological analyses. Current projects investigate interindividual variability in exercise responses and systemic inflammation biomarkers. Matthew's research bridges basic science and translational medicine to address chronic disease management through lifestyle interventions.
