Professor Tom Yates is a leading academic in physical activity, sedentary behavior, and health at the University of Leicester's Diabetes Research Centre. He directs the Leicester Lifestyle and Health Research Group and co-leads the Lifestyle theme of the NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre. His work focuses on leveraging lifestyle interventions to improve outcomes for multi-ethnic populations with or at risk of long-term conditions (LTCs), emphasizing the '5 S’s' (sleep, sedentary behavior, stepping, sweating, strengthening).
Prof Yates secured a £14 million Expanding Excellence in England award from Research England to enhance lifestyle research capacity at the university, building on the University of Leicester’s top-tier submission to Unit of Assessment 24 (Sports Science) in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF). His research spans clinical trials, population health studies, and translational interventions targeting diabetes, cardiovascular health, and post-pandemic rehabilitation. Notable projects include the ENERGISED trial (digital health for diabetes management) and PHOSP-R (post-hospitalization rehabilitation for long-COVID).
His expertise spans epidemiology, behavioral interventions, and chronic disease prevention. Key collaborations include the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and global initiatives addressing diabetes, physical activity disparities, and post-acute care outcomes. Prof Yates’ work prioritizes multi-ethnic inclusivity and real-world applicability, with a focus on translating evidence into clinical and public health practice.
