Vernon Morris is a Foundation Professor and Associate Dean for Knowledge Enterprise and Strategic Outcomes at Arizona State University's New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. He holds affiliations with the School of Earth and Space Exploration, the Center for Gender Equity in Science and Technology, and the Global Futures Laboratory. His research focuses on atmospheric aerosols, particularly Saharan dust, and its implications for climate, air quality, and environmental justice.
Education: BS in Chemistry and Mathematics from Morehouse College (1985), PhD in Geophysical Sciences from Georgia Institute of Technology (1991).
Research interests include the chemical evolution of atmospheric particulates, aerobiology, and interdisciplinary approaches to environmental science. He leads the AEROSE trans-Atlantic expeditions, generating critical data for satellite calibration and weather modeling. Morris is committed to diversity in STEM, founding Howard University's first Atmospheric Sciences PhD program, which has produced a significant proportion of Black and Hispanic PhD graduates in the field.
Key achievements include over $70M in research funding as PI, leadership in NOAA's Cooperative Science Center (NCAS-M), and outreach programs like weather camps for underserved students. Awards include AGU's Lifetime Achievement Award for Diversity (2023) and Presidential Citation (2021).
Grants and advising: Raised $70M+ in research funding, guided over 150 students, and established partnerships with international institutions. His labs and teams focus on atmospheric microbiology, urban air quality, and climate modeling.
