Everette Joseph serves as Director of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) since February 2019 and holds concurrent professorships at the University at Albany's Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences (2015–present) and Howard University's Department of Physics and Astronomy (2013–present). Previously, he directed the Atmospheric Sciences Research Center at Albany (2014–2019) and led Howard University's atmospheric science programs (2001–2013).
His educational background includes a PhD in Physics from the University at Albany (1997), with dissertation research on cirrus radiative parameterization for climate models, and a BS in Physics from SUNY Cortland (1985).
Dr. Joseph's research centers on atmospheric observation systems, specializing in cloud-aerosol interactions, boundary layer dynamics, and air quality monitoring. He pioneered the AEROSE trans-Atlantic expeditions for Saharan dust studies and co-developed the New York Mesonet—a $26M statewide weather monitoring network. His work integrates ground-based, satellite, and modeling approaches to improve numerical weather prediction and climate resilience.
Analysis of his 12 recent publications (2011–2015) reveals consistent focus on advancing remote sensing methodologies, particularly LIDAR-based boundary layer profiling, aerosol-cloud radiative effects, and satellite product validation for operational meteorology.
He has secured over $85 million in research funding as PI/Co-PI, including a $5M NSF PIRE grant for US-Taiwan extreme weather research, $13M NOAA cooperative science funding, and multiple NASA center grants. His leadership spans interdisciplinary teams involving NASA, NOAA, Penn State, and international partners.
Current initiatives include directing the Beltsville Center for Climate System Observation, expanding AEROSE aerosol research, and leading the US-Taiwan PIRE project to enhance extreme precipitation forecasting through cloud-aerosol observational studies.
