Xiquan Dong is a Professor in Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Arizona, serving as Director of Graduate Studies for Atmospheric Sciences and Joint Professor in Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis GIDP. He holds a PhD in meteorology (specializing in remote sensing of clouds and precipitation) from Pennsylvania State University (1996).
His research focuses on remote sensing techniques, cloud physics, radiation processes, and climate model parameterization. Key interests include aerosol-cloud interactions, marine boundary layer dynamics, and satellite-based observations of Southern Ocean clouds. He has led field campaigns like ACE-ENA and SOCRATES, analyzing cloud microphysics and radiative effects.
Recent work emphasizes global radiative flux modeling, aerosol impacts on climate, and validation of climate models (e.g., CMIP5/6) against ARM observations. His contributions include developing the ESMAC Diags package for aerosol-cloud diagnostics and advancing LES simulations of liquid clouds.
He has collaborated on projects such as the NASA EXCITE initiative to expand Earth sciences research at Hispanic-serving institutions. His studies bridge observational data with climate model improvements, particularly in understanding cloud feedback mechanisms critical to global warming projections.
