Professor Verity Campbell Barr is the Director of the Plymouth Institute of Education (Plymouth Institute of Education) at the University of Plymouth. She holds a Professorship in Early Childhood Education and is an Associate Head of Research. Her roles include teaching on BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies, MA Education, and the EdD programs, alongside supervising PhD students. She leads research initiatives such as exploring child-centred diversity in early education and graduate qualifications in early childhood care.
Education: BA in Sociology (University of Plymouth, 1998), MA (London), PhD (Kent). Prior roles include European Research Fellow at the University of Debrecen and work at the Policy Studies Institute researching childcare and family policies.
Research focuses on quality early childhood services, workforce development, and child-centred pedagogy. Key projects include co-leading European initiatives on child-centred competences and childminder sustainability. She advocates for education’s role in fostering community resilience, particularly in the South West of England.
Scientific Recognition: Principal Investigator on multiple grants, including the Marie Curie Fellowship (Hungary) on early childhood competences.
Advising & Grants: Supervises 4 current PhD students and has mentored others. Active in grant-funded projects addressing early childhood workforce challenges and policy impacts. Collaborates with Dr. Jan Georgeson on child-centred educational resources.
Labs/Teams: Leads Plymouth Institute of Education’s community-building efforts, partnering with regional educators and policymakers to advance early childhood provision. Key initiatives include the Research Festival ‘Learning Futures’ and global policy dialogues.
