Dr Vassilis Tzevelekos is an Associate Professor in Law at the University of Liverpool, part of the School of Law and Social Justice within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds advanced degrees from the European University Institute (PhD & MRes), the College of Europe (MA), Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (DEA), and the University of Athens (LLB). His research focuses on public international law and human rights, particularly the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and its interaction with EU law. He serves as Vice-Chairperson of the UN Human Rights Council Advisory Committee and a member of the Council of Europe’s European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT). Tzevelekos is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the European Convention on Human Rights Law Review and advises on international law matters. His teaching includes modules on international protection of human rights, international law principles, and EU law.

Research Interests:
Tzevelekos explores theoretical and practical dimensions of international law, including the constitutionalisation of international law, human rights accountability, and the ECtHR’s European consensus method. His recent work analyzes the EU’s pending ECHR accession and critiques the Bosphorus doctrine. He also examines state responsibility in extraterritorial contexts and human rights obligations amid global crises.

Professional Activities:
He advises governments and private entities on international law and human rights. His expertise is sought in legal reforms and international litigation, particularly regarding migrant rights, climate litigation, and state immunities in aggression cases. He has held visiting positions at Columbia Law School and the University of Michigan as a Grotius Fellow.
