Vanessa Wills is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the George Washington University's Columbian College of Arts & Sciences. Her research focuses on moral, social, and political philosophy, with a deep engagement with 19th-century German philosophy and the philosophy of race. Central to her work is an exploration of Karl Marx's theories regarding how economic and social structures impact human values like freedom and equality.
Her expertise spans critical analysis of capitalism's intersection with racial and gendered oppression, as well as philosophical reflections on contemporary crises such as the pandemic's ethical and political dimensions. Wills has contributed to debates on solidarity, recognition, and vulnerable populations through works like Responses to a Pandemic: Philosophical and Political Reflections (2022). Her scholarship also interrogates historical injustices, including systemic racism through analyses like And He Ate Jim Crow (2021).
Wills’ publications reflect a commitment to interdisciplinary dialogue, blending Marxian critique with contemporary social theory. Her recent works (2022–2025) emphasize ethical frameworks for understanding socioeconomic systems and their moral implications. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses at the intersection of political philosophy and critical race theory.
