Brian Leiter is the Karl N. Llewellyn Professor of Jurisprudence at the University of Chicago Law School and Director of the Center for Law, Philosophy, and Human Values. His research focuses on Nietzschean ethics, Marxian philosophy, legal theory, and moral psychology. He co-edits the Oxford Studies in Philosophy of Law and has authored influential works like Nietzsche on Morality (2002), Why Tolerate Religion? (2013), and Moral Psychology with Nietzsche (2019). Leiter’s teaching spans advanced topics in law, morality, and political philosophy, often integrating historical figures like Marx, Nietzsche, and classical Greek thinkers. He leads interdisciplinary workshops on jurisprudence, political realism, and legal philosophy, engaging global scholars in debates about legal positivism, ideology critique, and value creation.
Leiter’s academic leadership includes directing research centers and supervising doctoral students in philosophy and law. His work frequently bridges analytic and continental traditions, emphasizing naturalistic approaches to legal and moral questions.
