Forster's research spans historical and systematic philosophy. Historically, he specializes in German philosophy (Kant, Hegel, Herder, Nietzsche) and ancient philosophy (Homer, Presocratics, Plato). Systematically, his interests include epistemology (especially skepticism), philosophy of language (broadly defined, encompassing thought-art relationships, animal cognition, and translation theory), moral/political philosophy, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of history. His method often integrates historical analysis with contemporary systematic inquiry, exemplified by works on Hegel’s skepticism and Wittgenstein’s linguistic theories.
His publications include books on German philosophy of language, Kant’s skepticism, Wittgenstein’s grammar theories, and Herder’s writings. At the University of Chicago, he co-teaches advanced seminars on Nietzsche’s value creation, Marx’s philosophy, and hermeneutics with Brian Leiter, focusing on genealogical analysis, ideological critique, and philosophical interpretation. His academic contributions also extend to courses on the historical development of moral, legal, and political philosophies.
