Professor Sally Sedgwick is a distinguished faculty member in the Department of Philosophy at Boston University, specializing in Kantian and Hegelian philosophies. She holds the rank of Professor and has been affiliated with the university since January 2019. Her work focuses on German Idealism, moral philosophy, and the interplay between Kant and Hegel's theoretical frameworks.
Education: Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Chicago (1985). She has held visiting positions at Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, and European institutions including the universities of Bonn, Bern, and Luzern.
Research Interests: Professor Sedgwick’s scholarship examines Kant’s Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals, Hegel’s critiques of Kantian thought, and the philosophical concepts of time and history in Hegelian systems. Her work bridges ethical theory, metaphysics, and intellectual history within German Idealism.
Grants & Awards: Recipient of NEH, ACLS, DAAD, Fulbright, and Alexander von Humboldt Foundation grants. She has authored influential monographs and edited volumes, including Hegel’s Critique of Kant (Oxford, 2012) and Time and History in Hegelian Thought and Spirit (Oxford, 2023).
Editorial Roles: Co-editor (2014–2019) of the International Yearbook of German Idealism with Dina Emundts. Former President of the Central Division of the American Philosophical Association (APA, 2009/10).
