Vanessa May is an Associate Professor of History at Hunter College, specializing in women's history, labor protections, and the welfare state. She teaches courses on the history of women, gender, and sexuality in the United States. Her research examines topics such as domestic workers, Progressive-Era reforms, and the decline of maternalist political influence. She serves as the book review editor for Labor: Studies in Working-Class History.
Her scholarly work includes her first book, Unprotected Labor: Household Workers, Politics, and Middle-Class Reform in New York 1870–1940 (2011), and articles published in leading journals like the Journal of American History and Journal of Women’s History. Her current project explores shifts in social welfare policy during the 1950s and 1960s.
