Eileen Boris is the Hull Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), holding the first endowed chair in Women's Studies within the University of California system. She specializes in gender, race, class, labor studies, and social politics, with a focus on women's work, welfare, and the intersection of state policy and inequality. Her academic journey includes degrees from Brown University (Ph.D., M.A.) and Boston University (B.A., Summa Cum Laude).
Her research explores the historical and contemporary dynamics of domestic labor, home care workers, and the global politics of women's labor. Notably, she received the 1995 Philip Taft Prize in Labor History for her work on industrial homework. Boris has been deeply involved in activism, collaborating with organizations like the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) and the Women’s Economic Justice Project.
Boris’s academic career includes teaching at Howard University and the University of Virginia before joining UCSB in 2001. Her current projects investigate the International Labor Organization’s historical framing of women workers and the evolving labor rights of domestic workers globally.
