Dr Vanessa Halliday is a Lecturer in Public Health and Faculty Director of Education for Health at the School of Medicine and Population Health, University of Sheffield. She joined the Division of Population Health (formerly ScHARR) in 2013 and has extensive experience bridging clinical practice and academic research in nutrition science.
Her educational background includes an undergraduate degree in animal nutrition and physiology followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics. Prior to academia, she worked as an NHS dietitian specializing in oncology and palliative care. She served as Lecturer in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Nottingham before joining Sheffield, where she has developed expertise in technology-enhanced learning and strategic educational leadership.
Dr Halliday's research program focuses on malnutrition prevention and treatment in vulnerable populations, with particular emphasis on undernutrition, nutrition support, and obesity management. Her work employs mixed methods including health measurement scale development and qualitative approaches. Recent research has centered on nutritional management for people with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), malnutrition identification in emergency surgical settings, and nutritional support for cancer survivors.
Her publication record demonstrates strong interdisciplinary collaboration across neurology, oncology, surgery, and public health. Key themes include developing evidence-based nutritional interventions, understanding patient and professional perspectives on nutritional care, and improving nutritional assessment protocols in clinical settings—particularly for vulnerable patient groups including those with ALS, cancer survivors, and emergency surgery patients.
