Vanessa Freije is an Associate Professor at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington. She specializes in Latin American history, media politics, and the politics of knowledge production, with a focus on Mexico and inter-American relations. Her research explores the intersection of journalism, democracy, and information sovereignty.

Her work analyzes political scandals, media censorship, and the evolution of public spheres in Latin America. She has published in leading journals such as Hispanic American Historical Review and Journal of Global History, and authored the award-winning book Citizens of Scandal (2020).
Freije’s research has been supported by Fulbright-García Robles, the U.S.-Mexican Studies Center at UC San Diego, and the NEH Summer Stipend. She is currently working on a new book project examining technology, violence, and information sovereignty struggles in Mexico.
