Dr Vander Viana is a Senior Lecturer in Language Education at the University of Edinburgh's Moray House School of Education and Sport, where he also leads the Institute for Language Education. He holds a PhD in English Language and Linguistics from Queen’s University Belfast and has held academic positions at Queen’s University Belfast, the University of Stirling, and the University of East Anglia. His research focuses on TESOL, EAP, corpus linguistics, and pedagogical discourse analysis, with a strong emphasis on educational technology and international collaboration. He has secured over £400k in research funding, including grants from the British Academy and British Council, and led projects such as 'Gender-ing ELT' and 'LIT Educational Hub.'
Education qualifications include a PhD (2012), MA (2008), and BA (2005) from institutions in Brazil and the UK. He has extensive teaching experience in various educational contexts, including face-to-face and online modalities, and has delivered guest lectures globally. Professional recognitions include his role as a Senior Fellow of Advance HE and his leadership in organizations like the British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL).
His research has been featured in international journals and books, including Perspectives on Corpus Linguistics, which was translated into Chinese. He also organizes conferences and workshops, such as the 2nd Latin-American Congress of Language Teacher Education, and serves on editorial boards for journals like Corpus Pragmatics. His current teaching includes modules on online language learning and TESOL research methodologies.
Vander Viana actively engages in educational policy and equity initiatives, exemplified by his work on gender equality in ELT through the British Council-funded 'Gender-ing ELT' project. He supervises doctoral students and supports early-career researchers in securing funding and publishing their work.
