Dr Alexandra Krendel is a Lecturer in Applied Linguistics at the University of Southampton. Her research focuses on online communication, hate speech, and gender dynamics within anti-feminist men's groups (the manosphere), including subgroups like MGTOW, pickup artists, and involuntary celibates. She employs corpus linguistics and critical discourse analysis to explore language use and its societal impacts. She serves on the executive committees of the Critical Approaches to Discourse Analysis Across Disciplines and the British Association of Applied Linguistics Special Interest Group for Language, Gender and Sexuality. Her work also examines pro-feminist discourses and interdisciplinary projects like the Wellcome Trust-funded Future of Human Reproduction. She currently supervises one PhD student in Applied Linguistics/ELT and accepts further PhD applications.
Her research interests span online hate speech, corpus linguistics, and gendered language representation. Notable projects include analyzing the language of pro-feminist men and the intersections between far-right discourses and traditional femininity. She collaborates on projects addressing technological advancements in human reproduction, such as ectogenesis, emphasizing ethical and cultural implications.
