Professor Valsamis Mitsilegas is a Professor of European and Global Law and Dean of the School of Law and Social Justice at the University of Liverpool. Previously at Queen Mary University of London, he held leadership roles including Head of the Department of Law and academic leadership in internationalization and European affairs. His research focuses on European and global legal frameworks, with emphasis on criminal law, migration, security, and digital justice. Mitsilegas has authored over 150 publications and co-edited numerous volumes. He advises EU institutions, parliaments, and international bodies, serving on committees like the European Commission’s Expert Group on Criminal Policy. His work bridges academia and policy, addressing contemporary challenges in criminal justice, migration control, and digital governance.
Research interests include the rule of law in migration control, surveillance technologies, environmental crime, and the evolution of EU criminal law. He leads transnational networks such as ECLAN and contributes to policy through CEPS collaborations and parliamentary testimonies on Brexit’s legal implications. Mitsilegas has secured funding for over 30 research projects and edits major legal journals and book series. His teaching in 2024-25 includes modules on Digital Justice and International Financial Crime.
