Valerie Caven is a Senior Lecturer (0.2 fractional contract) in the Department of Human Resource Management at Nottingham Business School, Nottingham Trent University. She serves on the College Ethics team, supervises doctoral students, and reviews ethical research applications. Her role includes module tutoring and mentoring in the NBS Online MBA programme.
Her research focuses on gender equality in male-dominated fields, particularly construction and architecture, alongside diversity initiatives and work-life balance. Key projects include a funded study on gendered jobs in a large employer and co-editing the Palgrave Macmillan volume Hidden Inequalities with Stefanos Nachmias. She has conducted cross-national studies in France, Lithuania, and Spain, exploring architectural careers and gender dynamics.
Valerie's career spans academia and the construction industry as a Quantity Surveyor. She previously led the MSc Human Resource Management and Training programme at the University of Leicester (Singapore). She reviews for journals like Gender, Work & Organization and serves on the ARCOM Scientific Committee.
Her research outputs span 30+ peer-reviewed articles and books, addressing themes like equality policy implementation, gender pay gaps, and architectural profession challenges. Notable collaborations include studies with Elena Navarro Astor (Spain), Vita Urbanavičienė (Lithuania), and Christine Raisanen (Sweden).
