Professor Valentine Cunningham is a Senior Research Fellow in English at Corpus Christi College, University of Oxford, and has been affiliated with the Centre for British Studies at Humboldt University, Berlin since 2013. His academic roles include Dean, Senior Tutor, and Vice President at Corpus Christi College, alongside serving as Chair and Special Lecturer of the Oxford English Faculty. He holds a titular Professorship in English Language and Literature (1996).
Education: Completed undergraduate and graduate studies in English at Keble College, Oxford (1963–1969). His doctoral work focused on religious dissent in Victorian fiction as a Junior Research Fellow at St John's College, Oxford.
Research Interests: Victorian and 20th-century literature, musico-literary topics, theology and Bible literature, literary theory, and the literature of the 1930s (e.g., Spanish Civil War writing). Notable works include editing the Blackwell Anthology of Victorian Poetry and Poetics and Adam Bede for Oxford World Classics. Recent research explores modernist authors like Joyce, Woolf, and Murdoch.
Affiliations & Activities: Visiting Professorships at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, German universities (Freiburg, Göttingen, Konstanz), and Perth, Western Australia. Regular contributor to BBC Radio and literary reviews. Served as a judge for the Booker Prize (1992, 1998) and Commonwealth Writers' Prize (2000, 2001).
Labs/Teams: Active in the Centre for British Studies, Humboldt University, Berlin, and maintains ties with Oxford’s English Faculty.
