Dr. Uwe Wiechert is a Researcher at the Free University of Berlin's Department of Mineralogy-Petrology within the Institute of Geological Sciences. He leads an isotope laboratory focusing on light element analysis, specializing in isotope geochemistry to study biogeochemical cycles, mantle evolution, and environmental responses to climate change. Previously, he worked at ETH Zurich establishing isotope laboratories and conducting cosmochemical research.
Education:
- PhD in Geochemistry under Prof. Karl Hans Wedepohl (Georg-August University Göttingen)
- Diploma in Geology/Paleontology (Georg-August University Göttingen)
Research Interests:
- Stable isotope systems in biogeochemical cycles
- Evolution of Earth's mantle and lithosphere
- Cosmochemical processes in planetary formation
- Advanced mass spectrometry techniques
Key Projects:
- DFG-funded Tibetan Plateau lake studies using gastropod shells as climate proxies
- Lithium isotope investigations in mantle-derived rocks
- Isotope analysis of surface waters across Europe
Advising: Supervised 7 bachelor's, 2 master's, and at least 1 doctoral thesis (Tomas Magna's 2006 work).
