Professor Sally Anne Gibson is a Professor of Petrology & Geochemistry at the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge. She specializes in magmatic processes, mantle dynamics, and volatile cycles. Her research focuses on understanding mantle plumes, lithospheric structure, and the interplay between Earth's interior and surface processes. Key projects include the REE-LITH initiative, which links rare earth element deposits to mantle dynamics and seismic imaging. She serves as President of the Mineralogical Society of the UK & Ireland and leads international collaborations on topics like Galápagos volcanism and continental crust formation. Her work combines field studies, geochemical analyses, and geophysical modeling to address questions about Earth's volatile cycles and large igneous provinces.
Her research interests include the geochemical and geophysical characterization of mantle plumes, the role of volatiles in melt generation, and the evolution of continental lithosphere. Recent studies highlight her contributions to understanding the Galápagos Archipelago's magmatism, carbonatite distribution, and the links between mantle structure and mineral deposits. She actively supervises PhD students and promotes interdisciplinary research through projects like the NERC-funded REE-LITH and collaborations with institutions such as the British Antarctic Survey.
Professor Gibson's publications span over four decades, with notable contributions to topics like volatile budgets in flood basalts, seismic tomography of continental lithosphere, and the geochemical evolution of large igneous provinces. Her work bridges petrology, geochemistry, and geophysics, offering insights into Earth's deep processes and their surface expressions.
