John C Lassiter is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin's Jackson School of Geosciences, holding the Second Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Yager Professorship. His research focuses on isotope and trace element geochemistry to study Earth's origin and evolution, particularly mantle and crustal processes, mantle plumes, magma dynamics, and chemical fluxes in tectonic environments. He investigates mantle heterogeneity, volatile cycling (water, chlorine, lithium), and the thermal/chemical evolution of Earth's core and core-mantle boundary.
Key research themes include crust-lithosphere recycling, volatile distribution in Earth's interior, and metasomatism mechanisms. Recent work explores isotopic signatures (Ca, O, H, Cl, Li) in mantle xenoliths, basalts, and hydrothermal systems to trace subduction-derived materials and mantle processes. His studies span global locations like Hawaii, the Colorado Plateau, Cook-Austral Islands, and Vietnam.
Publications highlight innovative applications of isotopic tracers to decode mantle dynamics, subduction zone processes, and continental crust evolution. He employs advanced analytical methods including MC-ICP-MS and N-TIMS for precise isotopic measurements. His work bridges geochemistry with tectonics, offering insights into Earth's deep structure and volatile cycles.
