Prof Uma Palanisamy is a biomedical researcher and medical educator at Monash University's Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences. With over 30 years of experience, she leads research in natural product pharmacology, gut microbiota modulation, and inclusive healthcare for marginalized communities. Her work focuses on polyphenols' prebiotic potential, Deaf healthcare equity, and sustainable health solutions aligned with UN SDGs.
Research highlights include establishing Malaysia's natural product research capabilities, pioneering the HEARD initiative for Deaf healthcare access, and securing numerous grants. She has authored over 100 publications and holds patents in health technology. Awards include the 2023 Nature Health Award for inclusive health research and teaching commendations.
Current projects include randomized trials on postbiotics for IBS, culturally appropriate mental health resources for Deaf communities, and digital health innovations like the DITE™ app. Collaborations span Malaysia and international partners in nutrition, pharmacology, and public health.
