Ulrike Bergermann is a Professor of Media Studies at Braunschweig University of Fine Arts (HBK Braunschweig), specializing in media theory, media cultural studies, gender studies, and postcolonial studies. She leads the research project 'Colonial Commodities' at the University of Bayreuth and has held fellowships at the Cluster of Excellence 'Africa Multiple' and New York University. Her work critically examines colonial histories, digital colonialism, and media-cultural intersections.
Education: PhD in Media Studies from the University of Hamburg (2000), with a focus on sign language notation systems. Extensive postdoctoral research includes roles at Paderborn University, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, and the University of Cologne. She has also held visiting positions at MIT, Yale, and the British Library.
Research Interests: Colonial aesthetics, material culture, gender theory, digital media critiques, and postcolonial media studies. Current projects explore cocoa's colonial taste economies, AI ethics, and decolonial media practices.
Key Achievements: Co-editor of the 'Postcolonial Media Studies' book series, co-founder of the journal 'Zeitschrift für Medienwissenschaft', and contributor to numerous international conferences. Awards include the Heinrich Böll Foundation Doctoral Scholarship and the Lise-Meitner Habilitation Grant.
