Dr. Maja Figge is a research associate in Film Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. She holds a PhD in Cultural History and Theory from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and has held interim professorships at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and the University of Art in Braunschweig, as well as visiting professorships at University of Arts Linz and Duke University. Her research focuses on transnational screen cultures, postcolonial critique, decolonial thought, and gender/queer studies. Currently, she is affiliated with the Bayreuth Academy’s Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence, working on her book project Black (Post-)Cinemas, exploring links between militant African cinemas and Afro-diasporic post-cinematic practices. She is also a member of the Zeitschrift für Medienwissenschaft editorial board and the DFG research network on Gender, Media, and Affect.

- Notable works include Deutschsein (wieder-)herstellen (2015) and an upcoming edited volume on decolonizing the arts.
Research Interests: Decolonial film aesthetics, postcolonial theory, transnational media studies, and the intersection of gender with decolonial practices.
Current Project: Her fellowship at Bayreuth focuses on spatialities, examining circulation networks between anti-colonial African cinemas and contemporary Black post-cinematic practices to challenge Eurocentric media frameworks.
Professional Activities: Former member of the German Association for Media Studies steering committee (2017–2021), contributor to multiple peer-reviewed journals, and engaged in initiatives to decolonize artistic and academic knowledge production.
