Ulrika Wikström Hultdin is a Research Fellow in the Department of Science and Mathematics Education at Umeå University, Sweden, and affiliated with the Umeå Mathematics Education Research Centre (UMERC). Her work focuses on disciplinary literacy and the integration of mathematical symbols with natural language in educational materials. She employs eye-tracking technology to study how students navigate mathematical texts and explores strategies for improving readability and comprehension.
Her research interests include personalized instruction, the structural analysis of mathematics textbooks, and the cognitive processes involved in reading mathematical content. She has contributed to frameworks analyzing connections between symbols and language, emphasizing practical applications for educators.
Current research includes a 2022–2026 project investigating students' comprehension of mathematics texts. Her publications span educational psychology, linguistics, and cognitive science, with recent work highlighting text structure impacts on learning and communication strategies in mathematical contexts.
Ulrika holds a multidisciplinary background, having previously contributed to structural biology research, including studies on protein structures such as FocB and Transthyretin.
