Tyler Bateman is a Post Doctoral Fellow at the University of New Mexico specializing in environmental sociology with expertise in decolonial approaches, social justice, and computational social science. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto and serves as co-chair of the Canadian Sociological Association’s Environmental Sociology Research Cluster. His work bridges academic research and community applications through UNM's GeoAIR Lab.
Dr. Bateman's research investigates environmental issues through three interconnected lenses: emotional/cultural dimensions of nature connection, computational analysis of environmental cultural meanings, and community-based decolonial justice work. His scholarship emphasizes how colonial legacies shape contemporary environmental challenges and solutions, with particular attention to mental health dimensions of ecological engagement.
His notable recognition includes the 2020 SAGE Keith Roberts Teaching Innovations Award for developing 'just sustainability' pedagogy that connects environmental issues to decolonization and social justice. This teaching framework helps students understand social science's real-world relevance while building academic and professional skills.
