Tyina Steptoe is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Arizona, affiliated with the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Her research focuses on race, gender, and cultural dynamics in 20th-century America, with particular emphasis on Houston’s racial complexities and musical heritage. She is the author of *Houston Bound: Culture and Color in a Jim Crow City* (2016), which won multiple academic awards.
Her current project examines the history of sexuality and gender in popular music. She has published in *American Quarterly* and contributed to public-facing initiatives like the TV show *Who Do You Think You Are* as a historical advisor. Steptoe also hosts the radio program *Soul Stories* on KXCI Tucson, exploring rhythm and blues music’s roots.
Award-winning scholar with expertise in multiracial histories and urban cultures, she organized interdisciplinary courses such as *The Santa Fe Trail: In Search of the Multiracial West* during her graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
