John Bass is an Associate Professor of Music and Director of the Mike Curb Institute for Music at Rhodes College. He holds a B.M. from the University of Southern Mississippi and M.M. and Ph.D. in historical musicology from the University of Memphis. His research focuses on amplifying underrepresented voices in jazz history and innovative pedagogy, as highlighted in his 2023 article on reframing blues education. Bass teaches courses such as 'Music and Community in Memphis' and 'Audio Engineering,' emphasizing local cultural engagement. He is a guitarist with performances alongside artists like Bobby Rush and Eddie Cotton, including a notable 2021 recording of 'America the Beautiful.' Active in Memphis arts, he serves on the Recording Academy’s education committee and boards of ArtsMemphis and the Overton Park Shell.
