Gayle Wald is a Professor of American Studies at George Washington University’s Columbian College of Arts & Sciences. Her research focuses on African American culture, popular music, and cultural memory, with particular emphasis on intersections of race, gender, and media. She holds a PhD in English and has authored influential books such as *Shout, Sister, Shout!* (on Sister Rosetta Tharpe) and *It’s Been Beautiful* (on the *Soul!* TV program). Wald’s work explores cultural agency through music, television, and literature, often highlighting marginalized voices and digital-age memory practices. She has held prestigious fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and NEH. Her recent book, *This Is Rhythm* (2025), examines Ella Jenkins and children’s music in the civil rights era.
Wald’s expertise spans African American cultural history, feminist theory, and cultural studies. She has co-edited journals like *Journal of Popular Music Studies* and contributed to *Bloomsbury’s 33-1/3 series*. Her articles analyze topics from Motown girl groups to queer readings of rock-and-roll history, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches.
