Brian Ward is a Professor of American Studies at Northumbria University, previously holding chairs at the University of Manchester and the University of Florida. He specializes in US Southern history, African American studies, music, and Anglo-American cultural relations. His research emphasizes the civil rights movement, popular music, and media's role in social change. Ward has authored ten books, including Just My Soul Responding (1998) and Radio and the Struggle for Civil Rights in the South (2004), which have won multiple awards like the American Book Award and the Rawley Prize.
Education: PhD in History (1995), BA in American Studies (1984), both from the University of Northumbria.
