Jesmyn Ward is a Professor of Creative Writing in the Department of English at Tulane University's School of Liberal Arts. A two-time National Book Award winner and MacArthur Fellow, she holds an MFA from the University of Michigan and is recognized as one of America's preeminent literary voices.
Her research and creative work centers on African American experiences in the rural South, blending historical fiction with magical realism. Ward's scholarship explores themes of intergenerational trauma, ancestral memory, and resilience within Black communities, particularly through the lens of Mississippi's Gulf Coast region where she was raised.
Ward's literary achievements include the critically acclaimed novels Let Us Descend (2023), Sing, Unburied, Sing (2017), Salvage the Bones (2011), and Where the Line Bleeds (2008), alongside the memoir Men We Reaped (2013). Her work consistently examines the intersections of race, poverty, and identity in the American South.
