Jesmyn Ward is Professor of English and Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Tulane University. A two-time National Book Award winner for fiction (2011, 2017) and MacArthur Fellow, her work explores Southern Black experiences through novels including Where the Line Bleeds, Salvage the Bones, and Sing, Unburied, Sing. She has held residencies at Stanford University and the University of Mississippi.
Her writing examines familial bonds, poverty, addiction, and racial injustice in rural Mississippi communities. Ward also edited the anthology The Fire This Time and authored the memoir Men We Reaped, a National Book Critics Circle finalist.
Honors include the Strauss Living Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. She frequently addresses themes of hard work and community respect, as seen in her commencement-derived book Navigate Your Stars.
