Julie Buntin

Julie Buntin is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Michigan, affiliated with the MFA Faculty and Graduate Faculty. She holds a PhD and specializes in creative writing, with a focus on fiction and narrative nonfiction. Her work has been supported by institutions like the MacDowell Colony and Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference.

Her debut novel, Marlena, received significant acclaim as a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle John Leonard Prize and a Michigan Notable Book. Upcoming publications include Notes to New Mothers (a co-edited anthology) and her second novel, Famous Men (winner of the Ellen Levine Fund Award, to be published in 2026).

Buntin’s writing appears in prestigious outlets like The Atlantic, Harper’s, Vogue, and The New York Times. She previously directed writing programs at Catapult and has taught creative writing at NYU, Columbia University, and other institutions.
