His research focuses on the textual history of the Septuagint, particularly the books of Samuel and Kings, combining textual criticism with archaeological and historical methodologies. He leads major projects such as The Septuagint and Its Ancient Versions (2019–2023) and currently edits the Greek 2 Samuel for the Göttingen Septuagint project. Kauhanen’s work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, integrating biblical texts with archaeological evidence and ancient versions.
His research has been supported by projects funded by the Academy of Finland, including the ongoing Hexapla of 1-2 Samuel (2023–2027). He actively participates in international collaborations, presenting at conferences and serving as an invited speaker on topics like biblical textual traditions and ancient synoptic studies. Kauhanen’s contributions appear in peer-reviewed volumes such as Resources for Biblical Study and Contributions to Biblical Exegesis & Theology.
As a principal investigator, he oversees teams examining textual transmission and biblical reception history. His recent work explores the intersection of source criticism with archaeological findings, exemplified in his 2024 analysis of Abel and Dan in 2 Samuel. Kauhanen’s academic activities include editorial roles, academic visits (e.g., Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies), and contributions to collaborative projects like the Centre of Excellence in Changes in Sacred Texts and Traditions.
