Professor Trudie Chalder is a Professor of Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy and Head of the Department of Psychological Medicine at King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN). She focuses on epidemiological and aetiological studies of fatigue and distress in adolescents and adults with long-term conditions, evaluating cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) efficacy for chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, and post-COVID conditions. Her work spans clinical research, intervention development, and public health responses to chronic illnesses.
Key affiliations include the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre and leadership roles in studies such as PHOSP-COVID and the CLoCk cohort, examining long-term effects of SARS-CoV-2 infections. She co-leads projects on post-hospitalisation rehabilitation, pediatric long-COVID outcomes, and psychological interventions for cancer survivors and patients with muscle disorders.
Research interests emphasize translating evidence into clinical practice, particularly through transdiagnostic cognitive behavioral approaches and patient-centered care. Notable contributions include developing interventions like Balance-ACT and ACT+, and publishing on fatigue management, mental health impacts of pandemics, and functional neurological disorders.
Her collaborative work involves multidisciplinary teams in the UK and globally, addressing persistent physical symptoms, medication adherence in inflammatory bowel disease, and psychobiological mechanisms in functional disorders. She actively publishes in high-impact journals like Health Expectations, Psychological Medicine, and Nature Communications.
