Trond Klevgaard is an Associate Professor of Design History at Kristiania University College, Oslo, affiliated with the School of Arts, Design and Media and the Department of Creativity, Storytelling and Design. Previously, he served as head of the BA Graphic Design programme from 2019-2021.
Klevgaard's research focuses on Scandinavian design history, particularly the interwar period's 'new typography' movement. His work examines concepts like domestication, networks, and center-periphery relations within design history. He has a strong background as a professional graphic designer with experience in London and Berlin across various domains including wayfinding, corporate identity, editorial design, and book design.
His major scholarly achievement is the 2021 monograph The New Typography in Scandinavia, which represents the first comprehensive study of this design movement in the Scandinavian context. His publications consistently explore how Scandinavian designers adapted international modernist principles to local contexts.
Klevgaard currently leads the transdisciplinary D-FoU: Working Group for Design Research, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to advancing design scholarship.
His academic credentials include a PhD in design history from the Royal College of Art and Victoria & Albert Museum in London, along with a BA (Hons) in Graphic and Media Design and an MA in Graphic Design, both from London College of Communication, University of the Arts London.
