Dr Tracy Piper-wright serves as Deputy Head of Division for Art, Design and Innovation at the University of Chester within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. As a Senior Lecturer in Photography, she teaches across all levels of the BA Photography programme, MA Fine Art, and MA Design programmes, with extensive experience in Higher Education.
Her academic credentials include:
- PhD from Glyndwr University (2006-2011)
- BA Fine Art from Glyndwr University (2002-2005)
- BA English and Philosophy from University of Hull (1992-1995)
As a multimedia artist and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Dr Piper-wright's research investigates photographic culture, technological developments, and everyday photographic practices. Her notable project 'In Pursuit of Error' (2014-2021) examined photographic 'mistakes' and proposed an 'aesthetics of chance' in artistic practice. Current research explores non-human agency and photographic materiality through 'slow photography' and sustainable alternative processes.
Her interdisciplinary work includes Arts and Health collaborations such as the Digital R&D Fund for the Arts project 'Show and Tell' (2013-2015) and the Social Photography Research Group investigating social media photography's impact on youth mental health.

Dr Piper-wright actively engages in teaching and supervision, serving as module leader for Photography Theory and Collaborative Practice. She has secured research funding from Nesta, Arts Council England, AHRC, and UKRI. Her work bridges academic research with practical applications in arts education and mental health initiatives.
She contributes to multiple Research and Knowledge Exchange Institutes at the University of Chester: Culture and Society, Sustainability and Environment, and Health and Wellbeing.
