Dr Cian Quayle is an Associate Professor and Programme Leader for BA Photography at the University of Chester, affiliated with the Department of Art and Design within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. He has led interdisciplinary initiatives such as Contemporary Art Space Chester (CASC) and serves as Director of Studies for practice-based PhD students.

Quayle’s research explores place, home, and exile cultures, using photography to document and reimagine spatial and cultural trajectories. His work engages with autobiographical narratives, pilgrimage sites, cinematic landscapes, and the legacies of artists like Kurt Schwitters and photographers such as Ed Ruscha. Recent projects include Clochán (Ireland landscapes) and Sites of the Habitus and the Filmic (urban cinematic spaces).
His 14 research outputs (2007–2024) span exhibitions, books, and journal articles, focusing on landscape studies, archival practices, and text-image intersections. These works highlight interdisciplinary collaborations, historical analysis, and contemporary photographic methodologies.

Quayle mentors PhD students and has served as External Examiner for UK BA Photography programs. His teaching emphasizes embodied practice, theory-context integration, and analog/digital photography. He also contributes to the Faculty Ethics Committee.
