Roel Paredaens

Roel Paredaens is a Senior Lecturer and Course Leader in the BA(Hons) Photography course at the University of Portsmouth, within the School of Architecture, Art and Design under the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries. He joined the university in 2015, previously serving as a Teaching Fellow in Photography at Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton.

Research Interests: Paredaens explores narrative structures in photography, focusing on its dual role as a scientific and abstract medium. His work engages with ecology, sustainability, and non-visual experiences, particularly through representations of idealized memories and landscapes of the Belgian coast. He is a member of the 'This' photographic research group.

Teaching & Leadership: As Level 6 Coordinator, he oversees modules like Major Projects in Photography and Professional Practice. He contributes to courses on Photographic Critical Practices, Advanced Skills, and Research in the Public Sphere. He organizes events such as the Visiting Speaker Programme, Portsmouth and London shows, and graduate publications.

Exhibitions: His work has been featured internationally, including the Daegu Photo Biennale (South Korea), Photomonth (Krakow, Poland), and Screenworlds’ Contemporary Photography from Flanders (Brussels).
